The Successful De-Propping of First-Bay Roof of the Biggest Airport in the Middle East——Another Monument in the Construction History of Abu Dhabi International Airport

On August 20th, after five hours of continuous work, the first bay’s temporary towers supporting the main roof of the Central Terminal Building of Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal Building-Steel Project, were de-propped successfully and smoothly. This was considered as another important milestone in the construction history of Abu Dhabi International Airport after the erection of large-span arch and the production and erection of complex joint. This has also earned high acclaim from the invited Abu Dhabi local medias and representatives of the project owner (Abu Dhabi Airports Company), engineering project supervisor (AECOM) and main contractor (the joint venture of TAV, CCC and ATC), meanwhile fully demonstrating the great power of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (hereafter referred to as CSCEC).

It’s known that the project set up a de-propping command center with a general commander and seven professional teams for implementing de-propping and the de-propping was approved by project owner, supervisor and the main contractor. After about 3 months’ preparation and 4 times’ dry run, the project teams tried their best to guarantee each measurement data, each welding seam, each temporary connection plate and each high strengthen bolt meet the requirements of British standard specification. In addition, the project teams checked the de-propping zone for 20 times and explained the details to all operators before the de-propping.

At local time 4:00am, the de-propping started and was conducted in accordance with the orders done by the general commander staged from pre-check, jacking force reading, de-propping to anomaly detection, etc. Until local time 9:00pm, the four sub-stages of the de-propping for the first bay were completed eventually.

Furthermore, it’s learned that the project has a construction area of 550,000 square meters totally, required for strict enforcement of British standard specifications and to meet the requirements of ESTIDAMA as well as the green environmental protection policy in Abu Dhabi. Hence, the project teams had overcome various difficulties in the aspects of design, technical, fabrication, quality, safety and so on since the commencement of the project from December, 2012.

It is worth mentioning that this project is undertaken together by the CSCEC’s overseas regional company China State Construction Engineering Corporation (Middle East) (L.L.C) and CSCEC’s domestic professional company China Construction Steel Structure Corp. LTD. They both belong to CSCEC and their cooperation would be a typical example of association between strong enterprises in CSCEC so that they can take advantage of each other’s strengths and help CSCEC explore the international market more effectively under China’s strategy of “One Belt and One Road”.
